Nutrition Therapy Plays A Role In Childhood Cancer Care

Treatments for childhood cancer and other pediatric catastrophic diseases can affect appetite. At St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a team of dietitians work with patients to ensure proper nutritional care. Treatment side effects can cause nausea, unusual allergies and mouth sores as well as changes to the sense of taste. Nutritional care that helps patients achieve normal growth and weight gain, and continue normal activities is important to overall well-being… (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Managing the adverse effects of radiation therapy.

Authors: Berkey FJ
Nearly two thirds of patients with cancer will undergo radiation therapy as part of their treatment plan. Given the increased use of radiation therapy and the growing number of cancer survivors, family physicians will increasingly care for patients experiencing adverse effects of radiation. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been shown to significantly improve symptoms of depression in patients undergoing chemotherapy, although they have little effect on cancer-related fatigue. Radiation dermatitis is treated with topical steroids and emollient creams. Skin washing with a mild, unscented soap is acceptable. Cardiovascular disease is a well-established adverse effect in patients receiving radiation therapy, although there are no consensus recommendations for… Source: MedWorm: Oral Cancer

Energy Therapy For A More Beautiful You

There are many ways to enhance the natural beauty that is in all of us… through spa treatments, moisturizers, and skin masks, but have you ever considered stress reduction as a beauty treatment? Just as stress reduction can have incredible, dramatic results on the internal workings of the body, the outside can show amazing changes as well. The secret is found in a device called the SCIO/EPFX. This is an amazing piece of technology that works in conjunction with Quantum Biofeedback, an advanced interface developed out of traditional biofeedback. Quantum Biofeedback works by delivering the frequencies of any of 10,000 different items that are “recorded” into the SCIO/EPFX device. The items can be vitamins, minerals, organs, emotions, or remedies among other things. A Certified Biofeedback Specialist working with the device can determine any energetic deficiencies or excesses of these items within the client. Those that resonate highly are then addressed reducing the stress that the excess or deficiency was creating within their body or mind.

A powerfully concentrated therapy has been created within the Quantum Biofeedback program to specifically reduce the effects of stress and aging on the body and it can be applied to the skin, muscles, and connective tissues of the face directly. Therapy can be focused on whatever issue the client is coping with at that moment – lines and wrinkles around the eyes, loose skin around the cheek and jowl areas, or discoloration from age spots or the sun among others.

By removing the stress and delivering the frequencies of healthy skin and muscle tissue, the client can experience dramatic results after just one session. Skin will appear healthier, clearer, and the muscles and connective tissue will be lifted and tightened created the appearance of a facelift, but without the surgery or recovery time. Along with the skin related frequencies, therapy is also given to fight the effects of aging on the body and face. Blemishes and age spots can be greatly reduced over time and the face will also receive the frequencies of elastin and collagen which, during the aging process, the body loses the ability to produce naturally. The appearance of lines and wrinkles can also be eliminated or lessened on all areas of the face: eyes, lips, cheeks, forehead, chin, and neck. Scars and sun damage can also be affected by the therapy. Other areas that can be focused on are breast enlargement and reduction, lip volumizing, and hair removal, and weight loss.

In addition to the excellent therapies above which concentrate on the muscle and skin related issues directly, the client will also be receiving general stress reduction therapy throughout the session. Relaxing hemi-sync music is provided to balance the two hemispheres of the brain, creating feelings of well-being, insight, and relaxation. The client is also reclining on a chair pad which connects to the SCIO/EPFX. This pad transmits the frequencies of multiple items that induce a natural stress reduction process in the body. This can have effects that go way beyond the outer appearance of the skin and face. Digestion can improve, aches and pains can lessen, and emotional issues can be resolved more easily. Because the internal processes like digestion, elimination, and metabolism are all linked to the skin and it’s appearance, the addition of the overall therapy makes this modality more effective that those that focus only on the skin and outer levels of your appearance. So, all of these therapies working together can create an amazing result prompting a healthier, more confident, more beautiful you.

[Reflection and Reaction] Molecularly targeted therapy: when to stop and when to continue?

Oral tyrosine-kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improve clinical outcome in patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia, non-Hodgkin lymphomas, gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST), and breast cancer who have activating mutations, translocations, or fusions in dominant oncogenes. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) TKIs and anaplastic large-cell kinase (ALK) TKIs show a clinically significant effect in patients with non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have EGFR mutations or ALK-EML4 translocations, respectively. Optimal targeting of these molecular changes is a challenge because complete remission is rare, de-novo resistance occurs, and relapse and induced resistance is universal. An Update On Targeted Therapy In Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma

UroToday.com – For many years the mainstay of treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) was immunotherapy, with response rates of from 10% to 20%. An improved understanding of the molecular biology in RCC has led to the development of numerous targeted therapies. However, to date the best therapy has not yet been validated, but sequential and combination treatment appears promising. Sunitinib, an oral inhibitor of receptor tyrosine kinases, should be considered first or second-line treatment for patients with favourable and intermediate MSKCC risk-score… (Source: Health News from Medical News Today)

Frequent Dose Interruptions are Required for Patients Receiving Oral Kinase Inhibitor Therapy for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma

The experience suggests that the first 4 weeks of treatment is the most likely timeframe within which drug reactions occur. Therefore, careful monitoring and possibly additional clinical visits are warranted during this time period. Although a significant percentage of patients require dose modification, many can be restarted and titrated up to the targeted dose.06/27/2010 (Source: Kidney Cancer Association) Source: MedWorm: Oral Cancer

Dental Extractions in Patients Receiving Bisphosphonate Therapy

In their recent article, Lodi et al proposed a protocol for the prevention of osteonecrosis of the jaws (ONJ) in patients receiving intravenous (IV) bisphosphonates (BP). The authors provided sufficient follow-up data to document null incidence of ONJ in 23 patients receiving IV BP following their extraction protocol. Importantly, the risk for ONJ in patients receiving IV BP following routinely performed dental extractions has been reported to range from 16-fold to 53-fold. The authors note that one cannot know the exact proportion of dental extractions performed on at-risk subjects that result in osteonecrotic lesions. In this regard, we have recently published a longitudinal cohort study in cancer patients receiving IV BP. From the raw data of the latter study, it is possible to calculat…
