Influence of Pathological Nodal Status and Maximal Standardized Uptake Value of the Primary Tumor and Regional Lymph Nodes on Treatment Plans in Patients With Advanced Oral Cavity Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Conclusion: Based on the study findings, the combined evaluation of pathologic node status and SUVmax at the primary tumor and regional lymph nodes may improve prognostic stratification in OSCC patients. (Source: International Journal of Radiation Oncology * Biology * Physics)

Metastases to the lingual nodes in tongue cancer: A pitfall in a conventional neck dissection

Abstract: Some classical textbooks of anatomy provided a detailed description of the lingual nodes, which are small inconstant lymph nodes in the floor-of-mouth and the upper neck. The clinical importance of these lymph nodes in cancer therapy, however, has been underestimated so far. We previously reported an extremely poor prognosis of oral tongue cancer patients who had lesions at the root of the lingual artery and assumed that metastases in occult lingual nodes might be responsible for such lesions. This case report clearly demonstrates the distinctive draining course of the lateral lingual nodes, which may potentially be left untreated by a neck dissection. A 63-year-old Japanese male with T2 squamous cell carcinoma of the oral tongue showed multiple metastatic involvements of the lat… Source: MedWorm: Oral Cancer

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy Accurately Stages the Regional Lymph Nodes for T1-T2 Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas: Results of a Prospective Multi-Institutional Trial [Head and Neck Cancer]

Conclusion
For T1 or T2 N0 oral squamous cell carcinoma, SLNB with step sectioning and immunohistochemistry, performed by surgeons of mixed experience levels, correctly predicted a pathologically negative neck in 96% of patients (NPV, 96%). (Source: Journal of Clinical Oncology) Source: MedWorm: Oral Cancer

When to address level I lymph nodes in neck dissections?

Conclusion: Although the submandibular content is resected as part of radical and modified radical neck dissections, level I–sparing selective neck dissections could be a safe and effective surgical neck management strategy in appropriately selected patients with OP, Lx, and HP carcinoma.
